Welcome to the first day of the City of Lost Souls Rereading, a kind of revising for the release of City of Heavenly Fire that I host, and I'm happy you've come. As you are here I suppose, you know what City of Lost Souls (CoLS) and City of Heavenly Fire (CoHF) are, but if you happen to not, I'll tell you. Both are parts of The Mortal Instrument series by Cassandra Clare. This is one of the several series by her featuring Shadowhunters, whose job is to maintain the piece among the supernatural species and even humans, who by the way know nothing about none of the above mentioned, and kill demons.
When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder -- much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing―not even a smear of blood―to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?
This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know...
The last book will release on the 27th of May. The plan is that we'll be reading one chapter every day and like this we should be able to finish the book by the 23th of May so you still will have time to digest! :) After you read the chapter, you can come here where a discussion about the certain chapter, extras, news, interesting facts, and much more fun stuff is going to be waiting for you.
This first day we have the Prologue to read, a discussion about it and I'm going to bring extra content as well. (Some fan-art and news about CoHF)
SPOILER ALERT WHO HASN'T READ CITY OF FALLEN ANGELS AND THE PROLOGUE OF CITY OF LOST SOULS!!!
The prologue is not too long, only too pages, so there's nothing too much to talk about.
The prologue is in Simon's POV, who is trying to talk to her mum. He's trying to convince her that he's not a monster, he's still Simon, her son, with not much success, I've got to say. Before he could possibly persuade her, Simon gets a call from Clary, who's totally exasperated, because Sebastian/Jonathan is gone with Jace. And this is the point that might need clarification if you haven't read/don't remember well to CoFA.
Though I marked spoiler, I don't want to say too much about this, only what's necessary as it's not really the topic and also who might be reading it despite the spoilers, so here's what you need to know.
After a bogglie array of events, Jace, Sebastian and Clary end up on the top of a block house. Jace manages to get awaken and he and Clary seem to kill Sebastian finally. After the battle other Shadowhunters arrive a little belatedly to help and Clary goes downstairs to her mum, so she won't see that, there, up. However, meanwhile, Sebastian wakes up and finishes the spell, taking Jace away. And since Simon left for her mum's before they go up to the top, he doesn't know about it yet. Up until that phone call.
SPOILER END
Anyways, I think it's a really bumming start of the fifth book and also kind of shaking with how Simon's mum's acting. I quite feel sorry for Simon, nevertheless I can completely understand his mother's state as well. What do you think?
Extra content:
As I promised there is going to be some extra content; fan arts and news.
As it's basically "Simon's chapter" here's some fan art about Simon you may like.
If you follow Cassandra Clare on Tumblr you probably know that there are TMI Tuesdays when she shares exciting quotes, excerpts, news, information about her books. For a few weeks these are all about CoHF and we have been given some awesome things. Like this excerpt:
From Chapter 1:
Jace broke off the kiss. Before Clary could say anything, a chorus of sarcastic applause came out from the nearby hill. Simon, Isabelle and Alec waved at them.
Jace said, “Shall we join our annoying and voyeuristic friends?”
“Unfortunately, that’s the only kind of friends we have.” Clary rubbed her shoulder against his arm and they headed up towards to the rocks. Simon and Isabelle were side by side, talking quietly. Alec was sitting a little apart, staring at the screen of his phone with an expression of intense concentration.
Jace threw himself down next to his parabatai, “I’ve heard if you stare at those things enough, they’ll ring.”
“He’s been texting Magnus,” said Isabelle glancing over with a disapproving look.
“I haven’t,” Alec said automatically.
“Yes you have,” said Jace craning to look over Alec’s shoulder, “and calling. I can see your outgoing calls.”
“It’s his birthday,” Alec flipped the phone shut.
